- Students can practice spelling number words in shaving cream. Squirt a small amount of shaving cream on a tabletop, a desk or a cookie sheet for each student and instruct him to spread the cream out. On index cards, write the symbolic representation of numbers. Hold up a number card and upon seeing it, students spell the written word into the shaving cream. This activity provides students with a tactile spelling experience, allowing them to feel how the words are spelled. Additionally, children will likely enjoy writing in the shaving cream.
- Students must rearrange the letters of a number word to properly spell the word. On the board write a number word with the letters in a jumbled order. For example, you could write the word "three," "ethre." Children analyze the letters, rearrange them and write them in the correct order on a dry-erase board. Once all children have written the number word, write the correct spelling on the board. Each student who correctly spelled the word earns a point. The player who collects the most points wins.
- In this activity, students must fill in the missing letters to spell number words. Type up or hand write a worksheet of number words, but while writing the number words, omit a few letters from each. For example, when writing the word "nine" omit the letters "i" and "e." Children must fill in the missing letters to determine each of the number words. After filling in the letters, have children spell out each of the number words on their own.
- Engage students in a number word spelling race. Divide the group into two teams and instruct each team to form a single-file line. Invite the first two players on each team to step up to the board. State a number word, and upon hearing it the players write the number word on the board. The first player to correctly spell the word on the board earns a point for his team. The team who earns the most points at the end of the game wins.
