Chemical Disposal Guide

    Chemical Waste Disposal

    • Certain types of chemical waste -- detergent and solvent based cleaners, bleaches, pesticides and paints among others -- can be hazardous to human health if simply poured or flushed away. Some communities have collection, or exchange, facilities for the disposal of chemical waste.

    Collection Facilities

    • Chemical collection facilities may be permanent or collection may take place on designated days each week or month. Local businesses may also accept chemical waste for disposal or recycling; garages may accept used motor oil for recycling.

    Disposal Directions

    • Consumers should be aware of the dangers of chemicals leaking, igniting, exploding or mixing with other chemicals. Familiarize yourself with the disposal directions for each type of chemical waste and remember that "empty" containers may still contain residual chemicals.
