- Dodge began manufacturing and selling full-sized vans in 1964. The first generation of Dodge vans were known as the A-series. The B-series of vans -- B-150, B-250 and B-350 -- took over in 1970 and lasted until 1998. In 1998, the Dodge van received a face lift and the name was changed to 1500, 2500 or 3500. In 1999, Dodge offered two 3500 vans: Ram Van and Ram Wagon. The Ram Wagon came in one trim level, Maxi, while the Ram Van came in two, Maxi and LWB.
- The 1999 Ram Van and Ram Wagon have two engine sizes available: a 5.2-liter V8 and a 5.9-liter V8. The 5.2-liter V8 has two options in that it can be fueled by either compressed natural gas or gasoline. The compressed natural gas version produces 200 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 250 foot-pounds of torque at 3,600 rpm, while the gasoline engine produces 230 horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 300 foot-pounds of torque at 3,200 rpm. The 5.9-liter engine produces 250 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 335 foot-pounds of torque at 3,200 rpm.
- The 1999 Ram Van and Ram Wagon come with only one driveline available. It is a four-speed automatic transmission and is rear-wheel drive.
- The 5.2-liter equipped Ram Van and Ram Wagon get 13 miles per gallon in the city and 18 to 19 mpg on the highway. The 5.9-liter Ram Van gets an estimated 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway, while the 5.9-liter Ram Wagon is not tested for fuel economy. All 3500 Dodge Vans in 1999 have a 34-gallon fuel tank.
- The Ram Van has two body styles: 3500 LWB, meaning long wheelbase, and Maxi. The width, height and wheelbase of the LWB and Maxi versions are the same between the trim levels: 79.8 inches, 79.9 inches and 127.2 inches, respectively. The length differed between the two, the LWB has a length of 205.2 inches, while the Maxi has a 231.2-inch length. The Ram Wagon comes only in a 3500 Maxi, it has a 231.2-inch length, 79.8-inch width, 79.9-inch height and a 127.6-inch wheelbase.
- Being a full-sized van, the Ram Van and Ram Wagon 3500 may occasionally be used for towing or heavy cargo hauling. The 1999 Ram Van 3500 -- both Maxi and LWB -- have a maximum towing capacity of 7,900 lbs. The Ram Wagon 3500 Maxi has a maximum towing capacity of 7,600 lbs. The Ram Van 3500 LWB has a maximum payload capacity, maximum weight the chassis can bear, of 3,964 lbs., while the Ram Van Maxi is rated at 4,195 lbs. The 1999 Ram Wagon's payload capacity is rated at 3,527 lbs.
- While on the outside the Ram Van and Ram Wagon look similar, the interiors are very different. The Ram Van has seating for only two people and a large, empty cargo hull in the rear -- hence it being known as a "cargo van." The Ram Wagon is more of a people mover as it could seat 12 to 15 people, depending on seating options.
