There are three things to remember when dealing with any kind of anxiety, phobia or panic attack problem.
1.
You need to educate yourself about the physiological and psychological effects your anxiety problem is having on you.
2.
You also need to confront your fears, worries or phobia to help you overcome them.
3.
You need to maintain vigilance to stop any worries from creeping in and sending your body and mind spiraling into a panic attack, sweats or outright fleeing.
EDUCATE: Discovering that anxiety is the source of your problem and that you are not going insane is often a great relief to panic attack, phobia and generalized anxiety sufferers.
However, discovery is only the first step, you have to take the time and effort to inform yourself about your condition, learn methods that can be used to deal with your problem and decide what you think will work best for you.
You just can't snap your fingers or wriggle your nose and wish your anxiety away.
However, learning more about your problem is often a great comfort to sufferers.
The unexplained symptoms that have made their life so difficult for so long are finally understood and what's more, they can be dealt with.
CONFRONT: You need to confront your problem head on.
Simply accepting that you have anxiety, curling up in a ball and hoping everything will get better one day is not the ticket to a better life.
You can improve your situation dramatically by confronting, challenging and gradually overcoming both the anxious feelings and their triggers.
This is a gradual process.
If you are afraid of public speaking, you can't just jump out at the next conference and start giving an oration at the lectern.
You will have to work your way up to this in incremental steps, confronting your anxiety at each stage of the process and utilizing your relaxation techniques to overcome your fear.
MAINTAIN: You need to be constantly vigilant if you suffer from any type of anxiety.
You need to be on the look out for triggers, signals that your body is having an unwarranted adrenaline rush and other psychological and physical signs.
Identifying and dealing with these feelings is crucial in the effort to prevent full blown anxiety attacks, panic attacks or phobic episodes.
You need to continue to practice your relaxation techniques and continue to confront your fears.
Once you've solved your problem it requires that you maintain your new calm perspective.
Think of it like weight loss.
Once you lose those 50 pounds you can ease up a bit on the intense exercise and diet regimen you used to achieve that loss.
However, you certainly can't go back to stalking that all you can eat buffets.
Overcoming anxiety is like this as well.
Solving the problem is great.
Eliminating your anxiety is wonderful but you need to be vigilant that it doesn't creep back into your life.
