Common Hospital Diets

    Liquid Diets

    • Clear liquid diets and full liquid diets are usually prescribed after surgery or to other patients with temporarily sensitive gastrointestinal tracts. Liquid diets consist of clear juices, teas and broth. Full liquid diets can also include dairy products, along with other items within the clear liquid diet.

    Sodium Restricted Diets

    • Low-sodium diets are prescribed for people with heart problems, pneumonia or kidney disease. Lowering sodium intake will also allow liquids to go through your system faster for a cleansing effect.

    Diets for Diabetics

    • For diabetics, or others who may have trouble keeping their sugar levels under control, the recommended diet is very low in fats, sugars and carbohydrates. This diet is used in order to keep blood glucose at recommended levels.

    Diets for Heart Patients

    • Patients with high blood pressure or severe heart problems will be put on a diet that focuses on whole grains, lean meats and fish. It will be low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.
