- 1). Unplug an electric model of Poulan chainsaw. Let either a gas or electric model cool completely before replacing the chain.
- 2). Lay the chainsaw on a flat surface.
- 3). Place an adjustable wrench on the top bar-mounting nut near the chainsaw housing. Turn the nut counterclockwise to loosen it, and pull the nut straight out to remove it. Repeat this procedure for the lower bar-mounting nut. Set both nuts aside.
- 4). Pull the flat bar clamp plate straight off the chainsaw bar bolts and set it aside.
- 5). Place a flat screwdriver on the tension adjusting screw at the base of the chainsaw bar. Turn the screw partially counterclockwise to loosen the old chain, but do not remove the screw.
- 6). Grasp the old chain between a thumb and forefinger near the chainsaw housing at the bar top. Pull it straight up and away from the bar, working across the top of the bar to the tip. Continue pulling the chain up and off. While you're pulling the chain off the tip of the bar, the chain will release from the bar entirely.
- 7). Turn the adjusting screw almost entirely counterclockwise, but do not remove the screw. Slide the adjusting pin in the bar to the rear of the chainsaw bar.
- 8). Place the new chain on the sprocket and fit the bottom drive links onto the bar. Work from the top of the bar near the housing, moving forward to place the entire chain on the bar. The chain will be very loose at this point. Make sure the cutting teeth on the chain are pointing forward on the bar.
- 9). Slide the bar clamp plate onto the two bolts; place the bar nuts on the bolts; and tighten them hand tight.

Place a flat screwdriver in the tension adjusting screw and turn it clockwise to tighten the new chain to the bar on the chainsaw. Reinstall the flat bar clamp plate.
