- To install Linux on your PS3, you must first create a "Yellow Dog Linux" installation DVD. An installation DVD can be created by using the "Yellow Dog Linux" ISO, which can be downloaded from YellowDogLinux.com. There are several different download mirrors, based on location. When you select the mirror, you will be taken to a list of available downloads in that mirror. The ISO file is called "yellowdog-5.0.1-phoenix-20070511-PS3.iso." Once you have downloaded the file to your computer, use your usual DVD-burning software to burn it to disc.
- Before installing Linux on your PS3, you should backup your games and any other saved system information. These can be saved to a USB flash drive. Once your games are saved, you will need to free up some space on your system. You can free up space in the "System" section of the PS3 menu by selecting the "Allot 10GB to the PS3 System" option under "PS3 HDD." Once you have confirmed this selection, the PS3 will restart.
At this point, you can install Linux using the installation DVD you created. Once you insert the CD, navigate to "System" on the menu and find the "Install other OS" selection. When the DVD is recognized, you will be given the option to install Linux. If you select "Other OS" next to "Default System" in the "System" menu, the PS3 will boot in the new operating system instead of the standard PS3 OS. - Once you have Linux installed and set-up as your default operating system, you can return to the standard PS3 OS by navigating back through the "System" menu and resetting the "Default System." You can also get back into the standard PS3 operating system each time you turn the system on by holding down the power button while the system boots up. This should override the "Default System" setting and boot the system in the original OS.
