How to Meet New Friends at College

    • 1). Attend large, organized social events. At the beginning of every school year, almost every college has one, if not a series of, planned social events that all students are invited to. While not the most organic or spontaneous meeting grounds imaginable, they are certainly a very good place to start meeting other people. Often, events that seem like they might end up being uninteresting become fun because you end up meeting people at them with like interests. Even if the event ends up being no fun at all, there's certain to be a group of people there that are thinking the same thing. You'll likely end up leaving the event with new acquaintances that share like interests and points of view.

    • 2). Rush a fraternity or sorority. The Greek organizations have a bad reputation due to a hand full of overzealous chapters at a couple of universities across the country. The truth is, most Greek houses are very simply places for young men and women to meet, get to know each other and form bonds with each other that act as a support system throughout college and beyond. Rushing a fraternity or sorority itself is a great way to meet classmates. Not only will you be getting to know the members of Greek house, but your fellow freshmen who are rushing with you. If you don't end up getting in a Greek house, no big deal. You probably met quite a few great people along the way that share common interests and would love to hang out with you.

    • 3). Join clubs and societies. Every university has a wide variety of societies and clubs to choose from that offer the chance to meet and mingle with people who share your common interests. These can be clubs that are politically based (Young Republicans Federation or Young Democrats of America), ethnic based (the Italian American Organization) or even subject based (the Anthropology Club). The opportunities are limited only by your imagination, because if a club that you are interested in does not exist, you can charter one yourself. Ask the student life personnel at your university what you need to do to charter a new club.

    • 4). Audition for a university theatrical production. Even if you don't consider yourself a great actor, auditioning and performing in a play or musical at your university is a great way to get yourself out there and meeting new people. In big musical shows, a large chorus is usually needed. You may only need a little talent to land a chorus part. You're certain to meet dozens of other people at the audition and you'll get to know them even better if you're cast and you attend rehearsals with them. Who knows? You may even discover a hidden talent you never knew you had.
