- 1). Start Photoshop CS5. Click the File menu, then click the New link. Type "FancyLine" into the Name box on the New menu. Enter dimensions for the canvas -- not the line itself -- into the Width and Height boxes such as "9" and "3" respectively. Select the inches option from the two dimensions drop-down menus and click the OK button.
- 2). Double-click the Color Picker's top-left square at the bottom of the Tools pane. Choose a color for the line, and click the OK button.
- 3). Click the Line Tool. If you don't see an icon of the Line Tool on the Tools pane, right-click an icon of a gray circle, gray star or gray square. From the fly-out menu, click Line Tool. Note the Line Tool toolbar opens at the top of the work area.
- 4). Click into the Weight box on the toolbar. This number represents the thickness of the line, with "1 px" being the thinnest possible. Enter your preferred line thickness.
- 5). Click the Opacity slider, and slide the bar down to 75 percent. This makes your line slightly transparent.
- 6). Position the cursor at the left side of the FancyLine canvas. Press and hold down the Shift button and draw a line to the right side.
- 7). Slide the Opacity bar higher or lower, per your preference. Draw another line directly below the first, and compare the two.
- 8). Click the Brush tool, which looks like a paintbrush a few icons above the Line Tool. Pull down the brush head menu, second from the left on the new toolbar where the Line Tool toolbar was.
- 9). Scroll through the brush head options. Although these are brush head images, they'll soon be your line design image, so choose an artistic style brush head such as splatter, leaves or mini stars.

Change the color in the Color Picker if desired and the Opacity if preferred. Slide the brush "Size" menu to your preferred line thickness. - 11
Position the cursor at the left side of the FancyLine canvas. Press and hold down the Shift button, then draw a line to the right side. Repeat to experiment with other brush heads, line thickness and colors.
