- 1). Understand how to play big pairs in the early positions of a game. You should raise the bet when you hold a high pair in early position before the flop. This amount should be at least three times the big blind (or more) to discourage players from limping in and beating you on the flop. You can even re-raise another player, if you believe he cannot beat your high pair. Any time you are re-raised, you must consider the poker player and the hand she likely holds before acting.
- 2). Play your big pairs correctly in the middle positions of a Texas Hold ’em game. When no poker players before you call the opening bet, it is advised to raise it at least three times the wager. If there are other players who acted, you should raise the bet. The amount of your raise should be as close to the sum of the pot as possible.
- 3). Know how to play big pairs in the late positions of a game. Play a high pair in late position as you do in middle positions: Watch and react to the other poker players. It is possible to not raise the bet (limp in) from these seats, but you should only do this when you feel that a player following you will raise it. This gives you a chance to re-raise, but use caution in doing this.
