How to Find Missing Bank Accounts

    • 1). Contact the bank where you think you had accounts. Provide your Social Security number to search all bank records for any accounts that are open or were open previously.

    • 2). Go to the FDIC website's "unclaimed funds" section to search for bank accounts reported to the FDIC as unclaimed. Search using the legal name on the account and provide any financial institution information you have. You can also get information from the FDIC website about bank mergers and name changes that can help track old bank accounts that were moved into new financial institutions.

    • 3). Go to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators website to look for the state controller, sometimes called a comptroller, where unclaimed assets are assigned and held in trust. Click on the state you had the account in and follow the state instructions on finding your rightful assets.
