How to Test the Frequency Response of a Microphone

    • 1). Soundproof a room to conduct the frequency response testing. Professional sound baffling equipment can be used, but it can be expensive. If you are on a modest budget, heavy blankets and partitions can be used to minimize sound reflection or echoing and increase the accuracy of your frequency response test results.

    • 2). Set up a speaker in front of the microphone to be tested.

    • 3). Use an audio signal generator or a computer to play "pink noise" through the speaker. Pink noise is a sound that spans all frequencies with equal energy in every octave. You can download pink noise sound file samples from the Internet.

    • 4). Route the microphone's output to a spectrum analyzer, which will measure the output and generate a frequency response chart.
