How to Upgrade Video RAM in a Laptop

    • 1). Purchase a graphics card that is compatible with your laptop. For a list of compatible graphics cards, see the laptop's service manual or contact the laptop's manufacturer.

    • 2). Put on the antistatic wristband to prevent electrostatic discharge from causing any damage to the laptop components.

    • 3). Pry open the plastic hinge cover and pull it away from the body of the laptop.

    • 4). Unscrew the two keyboard screws that were concealed by the hinge cover.

    • 5). Lift and remove the keyboard from the laptop. Unplug the cable that connects the keyboard to the laptop body.

    • 6). Unscrew the screws that attach the display to the laptop body. Unplug the display and remove it from the laptop.

    • 7). Depress the disc drive's securing tab and remove the disc drive from the laptop.

    • 8). Unscrew the screws securing the laptop casing to the internal laptop components. Remove the casing.

    • 9). Unscrew the old graphics card and remove it from the laptop.

      Install the new graphics card.

      Replace the laptop case, disc drive, display, keyboard and hinge cover to reassemble the laptop.

      Turn on the laptop and download the graphics card drivers from the graphics card manufacturer's website.
