Central to Taoist practice is the cultivation of a peaceful and centered mind via meditation - though the traditional form of meditation found in Taoism differs from meditation practiced in other religions. Rather than focusing on breath control or sitting postures, Taoism teaches a contemplative mindfulness that can be applied to everyday things. Rather than fight against a busy or chaotic mind, Taoists go with the flow and follow their inner guidance.

Taoists practiced being mindful about what they put into their bodies, as they believe that impure foods may have a negative impact on a person's spiritual and mental well-being. Whole and natural foods are recommended in Taoism, while foods that are low in nutritional value or containing preservatives, additives and other chemicals are reduced or avoided altogether. Aiming to eat organic and locally produced foods is the simplest way of maintaining a diet in line with the Tao.

Traditional Chinese medicine has been greatly influenced by Taoism, lending to it the outlook that all things in the universe are composed of energy, or Chi. Different medicinal plants are selected and used according to their specific energetic properties, in the aim that the herbs encourage an improved balance of energy within the person who takes them. Many traditional Chinese herbs, such as ginseng, have pharmacological properties support by medical research.

Feng shui, meaning "wind and water," is the art, study and practice of purposefully designing and altering physical spaces in a way that positively effects the energy or Chi in that space. Originally feng shui was practiced as a way to select proper placements for burials, but today it is utilized in the arrangement of living spaces. The placement of a house, the arrangement and shapes of furniture inside, the color schemes and the presence of plants affect both the health of the house and the health of individuals living there.
