- Photocopiers are designed to produce copies of documents quickly and affordably. Monochrome photocopiers use only black toner and are best for copying pages with text only. These machines are ideal for mass-produced copies; the most efficient can produce more than 100 copies per minute. Many use xerography, which produces an image with heat rather than liquid inks. Ink jet versions are also available.
- These machines are designed for more detailed and specific work, rather than mass-produced copies. Smaller color copiers are available for home use; large machines are designed for businesses. Color photocopiers use cartridges that contain dry toner in the four basic colors: red, blue, yellow and black. They mix these colors to produce a wide range of colors that match the original.
- Multifunctional copiers can do a variety of office copying jobs. They can photocopy in the usual manner. They can also print documents, scan and operate as a fax machine. Advanced models can be connected to the Internet or a network of offices. Multifunctional copiers often require a high level of maintenance.
- These scanner copiers can be rather slow, because each document must be scanned every time it needs to be copied. Because of this, analog copiers are not as popular as they once were. However, they can still provide efficient service where scanned copies are required infrequently.
- These machines store scanned images on a computer disk. Once a document has been scanned, it can be reproduced easily. These machines can also reproduce photographs to a high standard. The quality, however, will depend on the resolution the machine can produce. Only users who require fine definition and quality need high resolution.
