With 1,723,803 schools in Michigan, there are a lot of students to think of. As with all other types of schools, Michigan's Department of Education is responsible for the safety and welfare of students who attend boarding school. - For the safety of students, boarding schools must be licensed by the superintendent of public instruction. To get a license, a school must pass the safety requirements, be accredited by a national association recognized by the department of education---North Central Association, National Association of Independent Schools, etc---and meet health and building code.
- To keep students safe from any possible malicious individuals, the boarding school is required to request a criminal history and records check from the state police through the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Requiring a background check is standard in all states before a person is allowed to work with children.
- Like all schools, boarding schools have students who may have greater emotional needs than other students, and they must be able to meet this need. In the times where a school professional is not enough, the boarding school must be able to provide emergency medical services if necessary.
