If you plan to modify your pickup truck in Florida, being aware of the state's vehicle modification laws can save you a ticket. State law does not specifically regulate the size of truck tires; however, complying with other vehicle equipment regulations will affect the legal maximum size of the tires. The state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles administers Florida's vehicle equipment laws. - The state regulates the height of your pickup truck's front and rear bumpers. The maximum height allowed, measured from the ground to the bottom of each bumper, depends on the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of your truck. GVWR is the total weight of the vehicle, plus the maximum weight the truck can carry.
Maximum bumper height for a truck with a GVWR less than 2,000 lbs. is 24 inches front and 26 inches rear. GVWRs of 2,000 to 3,000 lbs. can have a front bumper height of 27 inches, with the rear bumper maximum of 29 inches off the ground. Vehicles from 3,000 to 5,000 lbs. GVWR may have a 28-inch front bumper height and 30 inches rear. Trucks with a GVWR in excess of 5,000 lbs. are exempt from bumper height restrictions. - State law regulates certain mechanical features of your pickup truck. Brakes are required on each wheel and must stop the truck within 30 feet when it's moving at 20 miles per hour. Your vehicle must also have a mechanical parking brake. Auxiliary lighting can include spotlights, fog lamps and additional driving or passing lights.
While the truck is moving, no more than four front lights can be illuminated at the same time. In addition, your vehicle must have a muffler, and exhaust cutout or bypass systems are prohibited. The law requires all vehicles in the state to be equipped with a windshield and windshield wipers. - The dimensions of your pickup truck may not exceed 102 inches wide and 13 feet, 6 inches high. The maximum length cannot be more than 40 feet. Florida does not impose restrictions on suspension lift kits, modified wheels, shock absorbers, grille guards or after-market bumpers. Your pickup truck is not required to have mud flaps or fenders unless it is a commercial vehicle.
