- 1). Divide the top number by the bottom. Write down the whole number part of the quotient. Put the remainder above the same denominator as a proper fraction. Use this technique to convert to a mixed fraction. As an example, take 15/4. The bottom (4) goes into the top (15) three times, with 3 remaining, thus it converts to 3 3/4.
- 2). Divide the top number by the bottom. Do not use a remainder. Create a decimal figure instead. This converts the irregular fraction to decimal. In the example from Step 1, dividing 4 into 15 yields 3.75.
- 3). Convert irregular fractions where the bottom is equivalent to the top by replacing this unique case of an irregular fraction with 1. Fractions equivalent in the denominator and numerator are usually denoted as irregular. Any instance of this is a fractional equivalent of 1. Thus, 4/4, 12/12 or 7/7 all may be converted to 1.
