- 1). Turn the television and cable box (if applicable) off completely. Wait 30 seconds, then restart. While simple, this has the potential to solve many problems, ranging from loss of sound, improper synching, loss of picture or an overly pixelized picture. A momentary lapse in the digital connection can cause these issues, but turning the set off before attempting anything more complex can save you time and hassle.
- 2). Examine all connectors to both the power source and to whichever apparatus your service provider uses (i.e., cable box, satellite dish). Any break in the connection can lead to problems. While not as simple as turning the TV off and back on, this is still easier than the more complicated processes.
- 3). Change the input. You can do this by pressing the "Input" button on your remote or on the television itself. If your cable is hooked into "HDMI 2," but the television is set to "HDMI 3," you won't get any picture or sound.
- 4). Replace the power cable. The price and type will vary by television brand, but a bad power connection can lead to the appearance of "waves." This condition can result from a faulty pixel driver, but your television manufacturer will need to make that repair. This problem is common in Magnavox LCD TVs.
- 5). Update the firmware. With television technology constantly getting updated, many manufacturers such as Westinghouse, Samsung and Sharp, among others, are offering updates downloadable straight from their websites and onto a flash drive. You can then plug the flash drive into the LCD TV. The procedure will vary based on the brand and the type of update, but instructions are typically available when downloading the file.
- 6). Never attempt to perform more complex repairs on your own, especially any that involve taking the LCD television apart. This may void the warranty and can get costly, if your efforts are not successful.
