Hosting a large dinner party presents a challenge, considering that the host must account for a larger amount of people than usual and determine how to best cater to each individual's needs. It is important to calculate the correct amount of food, budget and time constraints. Preparing food for a dinner party can be a stress-free experience when armed with a few easy short cuts. Awe your guests with elaborate-looking meals that required minimal effort. - Buffets and build-your-own entrees are an excellent way to satisfy each guest's taste buds. Prep work can be done the night before and toppings can be refrigerated until it's time to start the dinner party. Have guests create their own salads, sandwiches, nachos or pizzas. Your preparation time will be cut in half and each guest will genuinely appreciate having a wide range of food options to choose from.
- Prepare meals that require minimal ingredients and are filling at the same time, such as stews, gumbos, chili, casserole dishes or crock pot meals. For example, one hefty pot of chili can serve a large group of people while remaining fairly inexpensive and does not require hours of toiling in the kitchen. Serve a few casseroles as side dishes, such as homemade macaroni and cheese, cornbread, or green bean casserole. These hearty items will satisfy guest's appetites and your wallet.
- Select a country to build a dinner consisting of its tried-and-true ethnic foods and the menu will practically make itself. For example, prominent Asian appetizers, main dishes and desserts can be recalled instantly. Serve edamame, miso soup or egg rolls as appetizers. Offer a choice of chicken or beef stir fry over fried rice or noodles as the main course, as well as finger foods such as sushi or wantons. Send guests home with fortune cookies for a fun after-dinner surprise.
