Navy Boot Camp
There are restrictions surrounding what you are allowed to send your loved ones in Navy boot camp.
There are reasons for the limitations such as limited space, national security and the desire to keep the recruits focused.
Every item that is sent to the individual in Navy boot camp is subject to an inspection. The inspection includes looking through personal items and inspecting food items as well.
Individuals completing Navy boot camp are not even allowed to have cell phones. They can only keep their cell phones until they arrive at Great Lakes. Individuals are instructed to send their cell phones home in a box with their personal belongings.
While it is certainly appropriate to keep the recruit updated on any family issues, it is also important not to distract that individual from the task of completing Navy boot camp. They need to stay focused and alert. Keep items light hearted and send toiletries that they really like and cannot purchase at the Navy store.
What To Send
Serving in Navy boot camp is intense and leaves the recruits with very little down time. Recruits often appreciate items such as pictures and toiletries. Many families mail items such as homemade cookies, which are not restricted. If the recruit requests such items as power bars or speciality foods, these items need the approval of the recruit's Drill Instructor.
Sending personal photos is also allowed but sending anything provocative is not encouraged.
The recruit also has very limited space in boot camp. They are allowed to use a sea chest for storage but this chest has to store their boot camp uniform and other issued items. Send items that are small, yet entertaining, like local newspaper articles, crossword puzzles, and jokes or comics.
