- Liquid dish detergent works effectively to both kill and repel roaches. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of two cups water and two spoonfuls of liquid dish detergent (any brand will work). When you see roaches, spray this homemade insecticide directly onto the roaches, which will kill them almost instantly. This will also emit an unfriendly odor to roaches, so spray around corners and cracks to keep roaches away.
- Cucumbers also emit an odor that roaches do not like, which will keep them away from the home. Slice fresh cucumbers and place in dishes throughout the home. Change them every one to two days, or as necessary to keep roaches at bay.
- Garlic is an herb that also emits a foul odor that repels roaches. Sprinkle garlic powder around wall borders, atop kitchen cabinets and in hidden areas such as behind the stove and refrigerator. Alternately, chop fresh garlic and place in dishes throughout the home.
- Bay leaves also have a scent that roaches find unfriendly. These leaves can be purchased by the pack in the herb section of your grocery store. Place the leaves around the home---under furniture, in cabinets, behind appliances. The leaves will eventually dry out but will continue working because the odor will still be present.
- Catnip is also an herb that is unfriendly to roaches. Place a few pouches of catnip around the home, or simmer fresh catnip in a pot, then pour into a spray bottle. Spray behind furniture, along walls and even above kitchen cabinets, where roaches oftentimes are present. Note that this may not be the best option for homes with cats, as this may drive your cat wild.
