What Are the Duties of a Health Care Manager & Administrator?

    Manage Business Operations

    • A health care facility is now managed like a small or medium business enterprise, and involves conventional business procedures and practices. A health care manager and administrator functions like the head of the facility or a de facto CEO, and ensures smooth running of all operations and allied business activities. Key business aspects encompass establishing policies and frameworks, managing human resources, allocating budgets and other financial resources, maintaining and managing IT systems and databases. He engages with all medical staff and health care facility personnel, and apprises them of their roles and responsibilities.

    Address Medical Team's Requirements

    • A health care administrator interacts and coordinates with resident doctors, physicians, surgeons, nurses, health information technicians, therapists, pharmacists and other health care professionals to facilitate quality medical care, treatment and rehabilitation of patients. She draws up daily schedules, addresses specific needs and requirements of the extended medical staff, and ensures that they are able to perform their primary duties professionally, diligently and with a humane touch. Occasionally, the administrator may engage with external specialists and consultants for specialized operations, surgeries and medical emergencies.

    Ensure Patients' Medical Care

    • A major responsibility of the health care administrator is the overall care and treatment of patients, and the availability of high-class amenities and facilities at the health care clinic. He motivates her resident medical team and staff members to perform their assigned tasks and duties efficiently and ensure the patients' well being at all times. He sets up patient fee schedules, streamlines billing procedures and liaises with insurance firms to correct anomalies. He makes a round of patient rooms, operating theaters, in-house pharmacies and other facilities and personally addresses patients' concerns or needs.

    Liaise With External Vendors/Suppliers

    • A health care administrator regularly engages with external vendors, suppliers, contractors and insurance firms. She has to ensure that the health care facility is stocked with vital supplies, medicines, drugs, food items, hospital machinery and equipment, technical gadgets and health care software systems. She negotiates with vendors to maximize purchasing power, draws up competitive and flexible contracts and follows-up on orders. This critical responsibility ensures that the specialized needs of medical staff and doctors, and the medical care needs of patients are not compromised on any account.

    Other Important Responsibilities

    • A health care administrator reports to a governing board or executive management of the organization; he discusses policies, issues and budgets, reviews the activities of the health care facility and submits reports. Depending on budgets, he established research programs at the facility and social advisory campaigns. He is often the face of the organization to external audiences and stakeholders; and attends fund raising and community outreach events and establishes programs for community welfare. Experienced administrators train, mentor and guide new recruits and staff members.
