Was it a good or bad idea for Harry Wu to entrust to Carolyn Wakeman to describe the events of his life in the book? There are of course advantages and disadvantages of this decision. The positive moment is that Carolin is the professional writer and she certainly has better English skills than Harry, who spent the greater part of his life in China. Besides, Carolyn is quite famous authoress and her name on the cover attracts a lot of potential readers. So, for the purpose to inform the people from all over the world about the political situation in China and to force them to open the eyes on the horrors of Chinese prisons, Wakeman was the best person. As a result, the "Bitter Wind" was more documental book than work of art; there are more facts in the book than the emotions and feelings.
The disadvantage of Carolyn`s authorship is the loss of authenticity in the book. It does not matter how clearly and exact tried authoress to write the autobiography of Harry Wu, she could not describe all the events such fairly and fully as Harry could. Every fact in the story was passed through her experience, attitudes and thoughts and she undoubtedly interpreted all the events in her own manner. As a result, the "Bitter Wind" is not a story of Harry Wu, but a retelling of his story from the point of view of another woman. The interesting fact is that the majority of the readers, who read the book, are full of desire to know another side of the story - the side full of feelings and emotions. People are much more interested in Harry as a person. There were a lot of emotional experiences in Harry's life - his thought during the imprisonment, his love to Meihua and his family, his sufferings and pains in the prison, his regret for the loss of the many years of his life, his belief in the future, his attempt o start a new life. Nobody else except Harry can tell the people about all these feelings.
