- Consume a daily dose of 5 to 10 g. fish oil (omega-3 fats) to increase your body's ability to respond to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that regulates blood sugar in the body, therefore anything that improve sensitivity to insulin will improve your body's ability to handle blood glucose, diminishing the effects of diabetes. This was described in a study published in the journal Science in August 1987, which demonstrated that rats fed fish oil had superior levels of insulin sensitivity to those who were fed a control diet.
- In addition to taking a daily dose of fish oil, consume 800 to 1200 IUs of vitamin E per day, along with the recommended daily dose of vitamins B6 and B12 (which can be taken either separately or together in a B-complex vitamin supplement). These vitamins will act to further improve insulin levels along with reducing the potential complications from diabetes, including heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and erectile dysfunction, according to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse.
