Frequent trips to the bathroom at night may signal prostate problems in older men. A number of natural products promise better health for this gland, but they may or may not work. Frequent sleep interruptions provide the motivation most people need to see their doctor in order to find a solution. The examinations may be uncomfortable, but only a doctor can determine if the condition results from an enlarged prostate gland or from more serious condition, such as cancer. Prostate treatment is one treatment option a doctor may recomment.
Prostate cancer treatment is something no man wants to consider. His loved ones may worry about the consequences. A doctor may recommend surgery, chemotherapy, or a minimally invasive treatment procedure called brachytherapy. Brachytherapy involves the patient undergoing low doses of radiation to kill the tumorous cells.
Extreme cases call for prostate surgery. Surgery is recommended in extreme cases where the doctor believes that he cannot reasonably reduce the size of the tumor in any other way. The entire gland usually gets removed to prevent further growth. A man who undergoes the procedure may suffer from incontinence or impotence as a result of the surgery. If a patient suffers from incontinence as a result of the surgery, he only loses lack of urinary control.
If a man simply needs treatment for an enlarged prostate, the doctor will prescribe medications known to lower the size of the gland. Only in extreme cases where cancer is not suspected will prostrate treatment involve removal of the gland located underneath the bladder. If the doctor decides to perform prostate surgery, the patient will be placed under anesthesia.
