How to Repair Exterior Cracks in Concrete Foundations

    • 1). Dig a deep trench along the side of the foundation that has the cracks. Dig down past the cracks to the base of the foundation. This way, you will have access to the cracks and be able to prevent future leaking as well.

    • 2). Locate the cracks. If they are larger than 1 inch, this could mean your house or building has serious structural problems. If this is the case, it would be best to call a contractor as soon as possible. If this is not the case, proceed with the following steps.

    • 3). Create a dry mixture of concrete plaster. It should be so dry that small flecks of dry plaster are present in it.

    • 4). Insert as much plaster into the cracks as you can fit. Really pack it in until there is no room for any more. Smooth the surface of the repaired cracks using a flat trowel. Wait a few days for the plaster to dry.

    • 5). Create a smoother cement plaster mixture and spread it evenly over the entire exterior wall. Wait another 2-3 days for the cement to dry.

    • 6). Apply a coat of foundation tar across the entire wall. This will protect from potential leaks and seal the cracks even more. Wait another 2-3 days for the tar to dry.

    • 7). Pack the dirt and earth back into the hole surrounding the exterior wall.
