Clean Up the School

• Gather parents, teachers and even students and ask them to make your school a more habitable place by cleaning it up. Scrub dirty walls, remove graffiti and pick up trash. Organize equipment by designating specific areas to put things. Ask each family or teacher to bring cleaning supplies such as paper towels, bleach or scrub brushes to help improve your school.
  
  

Establish Tutoring Programs

• If the students in your school are consistently struggling in certain subjects like math or science, consider instituting a tutor program to help them get their grades up. Meet with your school board to start a program in which teachers and parents volunteer to assist with homework and give additional explanations on confusing topics. Alternatively, see if your school's teachers can set time aside every week to stay in their classroom or office so students can drop by to clarify instructions on a project or lesson.
  
  

Improve Technology Use

• In this age of information, we have more than one way to access information. Computers, cell phones, projectors and e-book readers can facilitate the manner in which students and teachers acquire information. However, many low-budget schools or low-income districts might not have money to provide students with a computer lab or e-book readers. You can still improve your school's technology on a small budget by thinking outside of the box. Make regular field-trips to a library that has computers. Create a fund-raising event to generate funds to get a new set of projectors for your classrooms. Ask parents and students to donate their old electronic devices to the school.
  
  

Use New Teaching Strategies

• Improve your school by shaking up teachers' lesson plans. Conduct a group meeting so teachers can get together to collaborate on teaching strategies and lesson implementation. Meet regularly to discuss which methods work for students and which do not. Institute a buddy system to help your school's teachers revise and revitalize their lessons, thereby making your school an engaging and interactive place to learn. Poll students to find out which teaching strategies make learning easier and which confuse them. Ask your school's teachers to break down large or difficult lessons into manageable portions for students who struggle with comprehension of specific subjects.
