Step-by-Step Instructions to Change Out an AC Power Jack on a Circuit Board

    • 1). Clean and tin the soldering pencil tip. Plug the soldering pencil in and allow to heat up. Clean the tip by wiping it off with the wet soldering sponge.

    • 2). Apply a fresh coating of rosin-core solder to the newly cleaned soldering pencil tip. A properly tinned tip will be a bright, silver color. If it appears dull gray, you will need to repeat the cleaning and tinning. A properly tinned tip conducts heat better than a dirty, poorly tinned tip.

    • 3). Pull the cocking lever back on the de-soldering tool, preparing it to suck up the molten solder. Apply heat evenly to all the power jack terminals on the solder side of the board. Apply the soldering pencil's tip to one terminal at a time while holding the tip of the de-soldering pump near the solder. Suck up the molten solder with the de-soldering pump. Repeat for each of the soldered connections.

    • 4). Slip the wedge-shaped tip of a soldering tool between the power jack and the circuit board. Apply gentle downward pressure on the tool while applying more heat to the power jack's terminals. The power jack will lift free of the board as any remaining solder becomes molten. Clean the circuit board holes with a pointed-tip soldering tool.

    • 5). Insert the new power jack into the terminal holes on the circuit board. Apply the soldering pencil's tip to one side of one of the solder terminals while applying the solder to the opposite side of the solder terminal. As the solder melts, it will flow around the terminal. Do not apply too much solder. A reliable solder joint will be a bright silver color. A dull gray color indicates a cold solder joint, and you will need to redo the solder connection. Solder all the other terminals in like manner.
