Treating Skin Conditions With Herbs

Human skin cells are indeed remarkable.
The skin is not only the largest protective barrier of the body it is also the single largest excremental organ of the body filtering more in one day than the liver, kidneys, and lungs combined.
For this very reason it is important to address skin conditions as soon as they arise and to not only treat the surface but to also treat the underlying causes as well.
The skin is also an indicator of the overall health of the person.
If there is an imbalance in the body the skin will often react, for example many illnesses will cause skin rashes, hormonal imbalances can cause acne, allergies, chemical sensitivities and drug use can all cause skin problems.
Often if the liver or the colon are compromised or weakened in some way, the skin will respond with changes as well, this is the very reason that people with hepatitis often will experience jaundice, and why those with severe liver cirrhosis will often experience hives and may in rare cases even leak digestive bile out of the pores of their skin and some of their mucous membranes.
There are many possible skin conditions that a person can be affected with, and of these, eczema and dermatitis are the two most common.
Eczema can take on many forms and is usually related to respiratory allergies, it can vary by the patient but it is usually characterized by, itching, blisters, dryness and cracking.
Eczema is also wide spread affecting all segments of the population, men and women, children, and adults.
These conditions are treatable, and in fact in many cases curable, however the focus must not only be on treatment of the condition itself, but also on the underlying causes as well.
With herbal treatment and nutritional support relief can, in fact, be achieved.
One of the most common and widely known plant remedies is Aloe Vera.
Topical cream or gel preparations are widely available, and work to sooth and protect while promoting healing.
It works to reduce pain, swelling, itching and redness or irritation.
It is useful in wounds, ulcers, general rashes and of course burns, who doesn't know to put Aloe on a sun burn right? Another plant remedy that is very useful for a wide variety of skin conditions is Calendula.
Calendula is useful for the promotion of healing both internally and externally and is especially useful in any condition effecting young children, as it is very soothing to the skin but is very gentle, which is important as children often have very sensitive skin.
It has antiseptic properties that are helpful in such conditions as diaper rash, cradle cap, and burns, and it is also moisturizing to the skin and helps to prevent scarring, making it very important for use in any condition effecting the face.
As always it is important to exercise caution when using any variety of medicine whether traditional or botanical, always consult a physician or licensed herbalist prior to self treating, to insure a proper diagnosis, also be mindful of any allergies, you wouldn't want to treat a rash with something that your actually allergic to, you could just be making the situation worse.
In short, to ensure success always use good judgment.
