Mr. Kennedy Interview #2

Eric: Another topic we spoke about last year was the difference between wrestling indoors and outdoors. With WrestleMania XXV taking place at a stadium with a retractable roof, would you prefer that the roof be open or closed for the event and why?
Mr. Kennedy: I’d have to say closed just because you lose a lot of the crowd noise. I remember last year at WrestleMania, a lot of the crowd noise was lost.

It doesn’t reach you in the ring. It just goes up through the roof. There’s something about feeling that thunder of the crowd inside of an enclosed arena that just gets your blood pumping and your adrenaline going.
Eric: One of the questions I get asked a lot is from people wanting to become professional wrestlers. What advice can you give to my readers about becoming a professional wrestler?
Mr. Kennedy: First of all, you have to have an athletic background. You have to be athletic. Not everybody can be a Mick Foley. I think that a lot of guys get in and because wrestling is quote/unquote “not real”, in that it is not an actual competition between two guys, it is somewhat choreographed, they think that they don’t have to be a real athlete, that they can pretend to be an athlete. I think that that is a huge mistake and that I think that very few of those guys will ever go on to be successful.

For those that do get in, and even if you are not the most athletic guy in the world, you have got to work hard.

You’ve got to get into the gym. You’ve got to train. You’ve got to watch tapes. Ask questions of everyone around you. Be a sponge and never, ever take no for an answer. Keep trying. Send tapes. I’ve sent lots of tapes and I’ve gotten rejected a lot of times. But I never gave up. I kept trying to improve and take constructive criticism. You’ve got to be able to take criticism in this business too. If you can’t take criticism then you are dead in the water. Because you are always going to continue to learn stuff and you are always going to be criticized for you work. So that’s my best advice.

Eric: To continue on this topic, a lot of the times I get asked this question, it is from kids that are too young for wrestling school. What advice do you give to them?
Mr. Kennedy: Go to school. If you don’t want to end up like that guy in The Wrestler then go to school. The chances for success in this business are very, very slim. You definitely want to have something to fall back on if things don’t work out for you. If you can juggle both, then great. I know plenty of guys on the independent scene who go to school and also wrestle on the side. It can be done.

Eric: Is there anything else that you’d like my readers to know?
Mr. Kennedy: Just that this is a great movie that we came out with. I think that it is a fun movie. It’s not going to be motion picture of the year or anything like that. But, it is a fun movie. Try to have an open mind and enjoy it for what it is. Hopefully, they’ll see Mr. Kennedy in a different light than they have seen him before and see that I do have acting ability.
