- Propoxyphene comes in two main forms, propoxyphene napsylate and propoxyphene hydrochloride. The napsylate salt form is less toxic than the hydrochloride. However, both forms can kill your dog.
- Acetaminophen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication for pain and fever reduction. Although sometimes given to dogs, it may cause liver failure or death if given at the wrong dose or long term. If given, your veterinarian may test your dog for liver or kidney damage. Liver damage from a single overdose can occur in 24 to 36 hours.
- Because both medications in Darvocet are potentially toxic and safer medications are available, it is not generally used for dogs and should never be used without veterinary guidance.

Pain management options for your dog may include hydrocodone, tramadol, narcotic patches, supplements for joint pain, massage, exercise and physical therapy. - Never give your dog any prescription medications other than those given by your veterinarian. Many human drugs are toxic for canines.
