How to Use an Infrared Filter for a DSLR Camera

    • 1). Place your camera on your tripod and compose your image.

    • 2). Focus your camera one-third of the way into the scene.

    • 3). Set your camera to manual exposure, and dial your camera to shoot in black-and-white mode.

    • 4). Set your aperture to f11 for a large depth of field.

    • 5). Twist the infrared filter into place at the end of your lens.

    • 6). Take a test image with your remote shutter release and examine the histogram.

    • 7). Adjust your shutter speed until your histogram shows a wide graph that ranges from pure black to pure white, indicating a properly exposed image.
