You are never too old to pump some iron.
Pumping iron does not mean trying to lift incredible amounts of weights your first day at the gym.
Young people with their mentality of invincibility have tried this and have subsequently seen the error of their ways with injuries.
The goal of strength training or pumping iron as it's called, is only to increase the amount of muscle we have.
Increasing muscle mass can be done with light weights, as long as it's done on a consistent basis.
The journey to increase muscle can be done only with one pound weights.
Bicep curls, shoulder presses, lateral raises, french presses, all these can be with light weights.
The amount of exercises that can be done are quite numerous and the key is to start slowly and listen to your body.
Even more important than that is to start the program and see that YES, you can do it.
You will quickly find out that you are way stronger than you think you are.
Never neglect heart health.
Anything that gets your heart pumping is a good thing.
Again, this is not to say that one should embark on marathon training, but one should move.
A half hour walk after dinner or lunch works wonders on the mind and body.
Swimming is another activity that is great for the heart.
It's especially good for those suffering from arthritis in that it is no impact.
The joints of the body can take less pressure, while the muscles are being worked.
If you do have access to a gym, then there are other low impact workouts to be done.
The stationary bike is a great way to get your heart pumping and it's also less taxing on the joints of the body.
If you want to try something a bit more challenging, you can get on the elliptical trainer.
This machine combines a running workout with a cycling workout, but the difficulty of the workout can be adjusted and you always set the pace.
If the gym is too costly, a short trip to the exercise section of a department store can be very productive.
There are countless varieties of workout DVD's.
Choose one that is right for you.
There are many specifically geared to a more mature audience.
Start off slow, have fun and you will quickly see a difference in how you feel.
