Search the Internet for discounted airfare. Many websites are dedicated solely to finding you the greatest discounts in airfare. These websites will generate a list of airlines and list all of their accompanying deals according to the dates you are planning on traveling. You can also search specific airline's websites to see if they are running any promotions.

Check your frequent flier miles to see how many you have accumulated. To receive a first class ticket with your frequent flier miles, you will need approximately 50,000 miles. However, it only takes 15,000 miles to upgrade to first class from an already purchased coach seat.

    • 3). Join an elite airline program. Elite fliers enjoy many luxuries, such as getting to board the airplane first. Elite fliers are often offered upgraded seats whenever they are available without additional costs. To become an elite member, you must be a very frequent flier. USA Today reports that, "Most airlines require you to fly 25,000 miles in one year to attain the lowest elite tier."

Look for Y-up seats. Y-up seats are first class seats that haven't been booked and are now offered at a much lower price. Many people are unaware of Y-up seats. First Class Fare Compare offers this tip, "If you ever get into a situation with a phone agent, you should ask for Y-Ups by name as most agents are not trained to offer these even though they may be cheaper."

    • 5). Purchase an upgrade while you are booking your ticket or even checking in for your flight. Many airlines offer a discounted rate to upgrade your seat when you purchase a coach ticket in advance. First class seats may become even more discounted the day of the flight so you should always ask how much an upgrade would cost when you check in at the airport.
