I was lucky enough to buy an advanced copy of Carlos Ruiz Zafon's book The Angel's Game.
It was originally set for release next month, but as I said, I was lucky.
If you've read Zafon's previous book The Shadow of the Wind, you're going to love The Angel's Game, although there are glaring differences between the two books regarding the plot, way of writing, and the way Zafon made the ending.
The biggest difference between The Angel's Game and The Shadow of the Wind is that you can see that Carlos Ruiz Zafon wants people to know about his love of writing in the former, and his love of his audience in the latter.
Both worked well with him I think, but I must say that there is something off-putting about The Angel's Game.
Before anything else, I absolutely adore the rich and personal way of communicating of Carlos Ruiz Zafon to his readers through his novels.
That being said, I find it absurd that in The Angel's Game, he seemed to have run out of time in writing the novel that in the last ten pages or so, everything fell apart.
I was really surprised about the conclusion of the story.
Everything was really going well throughout the book.
We are treated to the familiar characters from the previous novel, indulged in all the beauty of Barcelona, and let in to Zafon's passions.
But during the last ten pages, I started panicking that the story hasn't gone anywhere yet but there are only a few pages left! The ending was abrupt, like someone slapping me hard on the face out of nowhere.
Suddenly everything was concluded in a couple of pages, the mysteries were solved in a page, and everything ended just like that.
I don't know if I was asking for too much or much more, but I really felt like I was tricked out of my wits having read the ending.
Nonetheless, the journey was fun although the destination was a bit disappointing.
The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon still has its beautiful highlights in the earlier parts of the book, and while I don't regret reading it, I should've just waited for the scheduled release next month.
