I have nothing but love for Salpicon!! As far I know, it's the Good Mexican Eaterie in Chicago IL. I've attempted so many eateries for good Mexican foods, but am not satisfied at all, and then I went to Salpicon, OMG!!! It is the Good Mexican Restaurant in Chicago IL.
The service is first-class and I don't think it is just because we are regulars. Upon arrival, you are sometimes welcomed by one of the proprietors - Priscilla ( cook ) or Vincent ( wine director ) - which are a very nice touch.
Bear in mind that this is refined Mexican. If you're expecting enchiladas or burritos, don't come here. My husband and I have loved everything we've ordered ( and we have been here 10+ times ). If you like some spice, get the meat tenderloin. I had it last night and it's wonderful. Aaron ( our favorite waiter ) said it is one of the spiciest dishes on the menu.
All the dishes have great flavor, but some are way more subtle than others. The ingredients are super fresh and I suspect that's particularly clear with the guacamole. It is straightforward, fresh and good. Not spicy, but the salsa that comes with it compensates for that.
The margaritas are superb and the tequila selection is insane. I ( almost ) wish the margs weren't as good because the wine list is astounding. We've only ordered wine by the glass because we can't avoid ordering a margarita ( or 2 ), but the wine has been wonderful ( and the changes / pairings are spot-on ).
The entrees are a bit expensive ( $18-$28 ), but they are such a treat they are worthwhile. Do not even know which one to suggest - tuna, soft shell crab ( in season ), chile rellenos, pork, lamb, and meat. You actually can't get it wrong. Ask for information from your waiter or waitress - they're fantastic and can markedly help steer you through the menu!
If you're hunting for something a bit lighter on the wallet ( and the belly ), we find it pleasant to belly up to the bar on a weeknight and have a margarita and an appetizer or 2. The appetizer options are varied and everything is savory - seviche, tortilla soup, jalapeno rellenos, and tostaditas de tinga. Yum!! Yum!! Yum!!
The restaurant is surely open in the restorations. Just pop up to the second floor, which is really nice? The renovations to the 1st floor should be complete in early August.
Love this place, such great memories from here! The food is upscale Mexican cuisine. Don't expect big portions, the portions are small, but tasty. ( Typical Mexican food such as mole, tamales, rice, beans...etc ) The desserts are heavenly! The staff is so nice and friendly, and they may accommodate giant groups as well . The beer menu is a respectable size. GO, you won't be disappointed!
Enjoy!!!!
