- The LS1 5.7-liter V-8 engine was equipped on every 2001 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. It produced 15 more horsepower and 10 more foot-pounds of torque in the SS package than the normal Z28. Output was rated at 325 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 350 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. This catapulted the SS from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.3 seconds and across the quarter-mile in 13.7 seconds at 105.6 miles per hour.
- The LS1 equipped Super Sport Camaro engine was a variant of the V-8 engine used in the Chevrolet Corvette. In the 2001, Super Sport Camaro featured a 16 over head valve (ohv) configuration, 5,667 cubic inches of displacement and a 10.0:1 compression ratio. The naturally aspirated 5.7-liter engine had a bore/stoke ratio of 3.90/3.62 inches.
- Even with the increased power, the Super Sport model's 5.7-liter engine was rated with identical fuel economy as the Z28. The 325-horsepower engine received an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated 17 miles per gallon (mpg) city and 25 mpg highway, with the four-speed automatic transmission. Models equipped with the six-speed manual transmission had an EPA estimated 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The standard 16.8-gallon fuel tank allowed the manual transmission 2001 Chevrolet Camaro SS to travel up to 453.6 miles on the highway.
- The Super Sport package was available as an option on both the coupe and convertible model 2001 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. Four-speed automatic transmissions were the standard gearbox in the Camaro Z28 SS and six-speed manuals were optional.

Both models provided 4 inches of ground clearance with a front track width of 60.7 inches and rear track width of 60.6 inches.
