- 1). Determine your eligibility. Although only a representative of Idaho's Department of Health and Welfare can definitively decide if you are eligible for Medicaid, you can check to see if you meet some basic requirements before applying. You must be a U.S. citizen or a legal alien and you must be an Idaho resident. You also must meet the state's income guidelines, which vary depending on the size of your family. Verify the income requirements on the Department of Health and Welfare website (see Resources).
- 2). Complete an Application for Assistance. Download the application from the Department of Health and Welfare website, pick up a copy from a Department of Health and Welfare office or dial 211 to request a copy from Idaho's Careline. Although you can get the process started by simply submitting your application with your name, address and signature, you will eventually be asked to submit a series of documents to verify your identity and income. A list of those documents can be found on the application and on the Department of Heath and Welfare website.
- 3). Wait for a decision. You will receive a letter in the mail telling you whether you were approved and detailing the level of coverage you are receiving. If you were not approved, the letter will tell you why. Expect your application to take three weeks to process.
