Interstate moving can be an adventure; it can also be a nightmare. Whether moving to the next state or relocating across the country, interstate moving is both expensive and time consuming. Moving trips should be planned with care to ensure a smooth transition for you, your family and your belongings. - Interstate movers often hire moving companies to move their belongings. Professional moving companies are expensive, so thoroughly research the company. Furniture and electronics can be fragile and must be handled with care. Knowing the reputation of the moving company can mean the difference between gently handled family heirlooms and broken antiques. Moving companies generally pack their own trucks and, for an additional fee, offer packing services.
- Companies such as PODS offer portable moving containers for interstate movers. These large containers are less expensive than hiring a moving company and are packed by the mover themselves. This method can help ensure that valuable items are packed to the mover's specifications. This method can be expensive, and movers should thoroughly research the moving container company.
- This is the most often utilized choice for interstate movers. U-Haul, Ryder and many others rent moving trucks for relocation. Moving trucks are available in a variety of sizes, and moving van rental companies often rent car dollies, ramps, hand trucks and sell moving boxes. This method is substantially cheaper than hiring a professional moving company or renting a portable moving container, but it is less convenient.
- When moving into a new place, plan a trip to visit the new city. Scope out housing, learn about utilities, crime rates and cost of living. After finding your new home, Drive the route between the house and grocery stores, shopping malls and gas stations. Learn the route between work and home, and visit the local schools.
- Once you've decided on the mode of transportation, prepare to move by packing all your belongings into moving boxes. Bubble wrap and newspaper make ideal packing materials. Be sure to clearly label boxes so they reach the appropriate destination. Never wait to pack until the last minute.
- During the move, call ahead to the relocation destination to ensure utilities are turned on and keys are available. If you hired a moving company, keep in touch throughout the trip so you know where the truck is and when it should arrive.
