There are a number of research projects going on to try and get to the root cause of what allows Alzheimer's disease to creep into the brain. A new one will start next year at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington D.C. as well as 26 affiliated sites nationwide which will focus on red wine. Participants will either be given a placebo or capsules of pure resveratrol, which is found in the skin of red grapes, tomatoes, dark chocolate and nuts. Animal studies have shown it activates a gene that protects the body and the brain from aging. "Alzheimer's is not an overnight process, Laurie Ryan, program director for the National Institute on Aging's Alzheimer's Disease Clinical Trials program, told USA Today. "Symptoms don't appear until years after the disease has started. If we can delay it from starting or progressing, we add quality years to the end of life," she said. Although red wine has been shown to help numerous health problems when consumed in moderation, this test is giving massive doses to the participants of resveratrol, equivalent to drinking 1,000 bottles of wine per day. So if the trials are successful, they will likely result in prescriptions for a compound of resveratrol rather than a recommendation to drink red wine. Regular readers of my blog know that I am a big supporter of the Alzheimer's Association, which has a 24-hour help line at 800-272-3900. They are also the largest private supporter of Alzheimer's research in the United States. Please help them with their important mission if you can by clicking on this link for Family inHome Caregiving fundraising site for Alzheimer's Association.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:
After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
