- 1). Identify the "Alt Code" for the symbol you want to use. Finding the code takes some time, but once you know the code, you can memorize it and insert symbols with ease for years to come. You can find "Alt Codes" on the Internet, or you can open the Windows "Character Map" by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," and "System Tools." (see References 1) The "Alt Code" for a symbol on the "Character Map" appears in the lower right-hand corner of the screen when you click on the desired symbol.
- 2). Turn on your computer's "Num Lock" function to activate the 10-key section of your keyboard. If your keyboard doesn't have a 10-key, you can't use the "Alt Codes" and you'll just have to put up with pesky copying and pasting.
- 3). Begin typing your Facebook message or wall posting.
- 4). Stop typing when you reach the place where you want to insert a symbol.
- 5). Press and hold the "Alt" key.
- 6). Type in the symbol's numeric code on the 10-key. For example, an upside-down question mark symbol is inserted using the code "0191." (see References 2) Two or three seconds after you finish typing this four-digit code, the symbol appears on your screen. At this point, you can release the "Alt" key. You can enter additional codes or continue typing as usual.
- 7). Click "Share" or "Post" when you're done working on your Facebook text.
