- 1). Select a wool blanket that is one size larger than the mattress the pad will be for. For example, to make a pad for a twin bed, you need a full-size blanket.
- 2). Felt the blanket by washing it with detergent in hot water and drying in a clothes dryer. The fabric should tighten up and the fibers mat together. If the first wash and dry doesn't felt the blanket to your liking, repeat the process.
- 3). Cut the blanket to fit the dimensions of your mattress top, plus one inch all around. Round the corners. Felted wool does not fray but for a more finished look, pin a 1/4-inch hem all around and stitch with a sewing machine.
- 4). Measure the thickness of your mattress. Cut four pieces of 1/2-inch elastic, each twice the width of the mattress plus 3 inches. Measure from one corner of the blanket 4 inches in each direction and mark these spots. Pin one piece of elastic with one end at each of these marked spots. The ends of the elastic should face each other, so when they are stretched over the corner of the mattress the raw ends are under the blanket and not sticking out. Sew in place. Repeat on the other three corners with the remaining three pieces of elastic.
- 5). Lay the blanket over the mattress and pull the elastic pieces around each mattress corner to hold in place. This is similar to how a fitted sheet goes onto a mattress. Make the bed as usual.
