Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic, is one of Europe's premiere tourist destinations. According to the CzechTourism.com, the official travel site of the country, Prague received more than 4 million visitors in 2008 alone. With plenty of tourists traveling in and out of the city, airline travel becomes bound by guidelines and rules set by the European Union to ensure everyone's safety. - When it comes to baggage and hand carriage, the standard weight allowed for adult passengers is 44 lb. for those in the Economy Class and 66 lb. for those in the Business Class. According to Czech Airlines, the standard carrier of the Prague Airport, maximum weight is strictly enforced for checked baggage for technical reasons. Passengers are also discouraged to put important papers like passports, expensive jewelry and fragile items such as art pieces inside their checked baggage.
Passengers are allowed one piece of hand-carried item for placement inside the overhead cabins. The standard dimension of this hand-carried item must not be over 45.3 inches and must be between 25 to 45 lb. When there is an excess of baggage allowance, passengers are asked to pay a fee at the check-in counter. - While umbrellas and walking sticks are allowed as hand-carried items, passengers are prohibited from bringing weapons, knives or toys that look like weapons. Flammable items, corrosive and toxic substances may only be transported via special conditions and are not allowed for checking in as baggage.
Passengers who need to carry personal effects like oils, creams, sprays, toothpaste and other mixtures must pack these in separate transparent containers of up to 100 mm each. Liquids used for medicinal purposes, such as insulin, can be brought onboard provided the passenger carries a medical certificate or prescription for it. - Before a passenger boards the aircraft, going through a security check is standard procedure. Passports and valid identification are presented, along with the boarding pass, as soon as the passenger goes through a metal detector. Personal effects, cabin baggage and jackets pass through this detector and, if deemed necessary, a physical check is administered by airport security. LivingPrague.com, a website with tips and recommendations on living in this city, suggests putting mobile phones, keys, glasses or loose change inside the cabin baggage beforehand, so as not to lose anything while going through a security check.
