Instructions to Refill a Dell Black Cartridge

    Buy the Right Kit

    • Dell printer cartridge refill kits are available for purchase on several websites, including Printer Filling Station, Toner Refill Kits and 123 Refills (see Resources for links to these sites). To get the right refill kit for your Dell printer cartridge, select Dell from the list of manufacturers and the Dell refill kits that are available will be listed by model. Choose the model of your printer and you will be directed to the correct refill kit for that exact model's printer cartridge kit. The proper refill kit will come complete with everything you need to refill your Dell black printer cartridge, including black ink, the syringe for filling the cartridge, and a thumb drill for creating the hole that will be used to get the ink inside the cartridge.

    Refill the Cartridge

    • Once you have the appropriate refill kit, refilling your Dell black printer cartridge takes only a few steps and a few minutes. First you will create a hole in the top of the printer cartridge for use in the refilling process. To create the hole, place the provided thumb drill at a spot on the top of the cartridge and twist. The tool will drill through the plastic and leave you a pathway into the cartridge. Once the hole has been made, fill the provided syringe with ink by placing the needle into the ink bottle and slowly pulling outward on the plunger. The syringe will fill with ink. Stick the needle into the hole in the top of the cartridge and slowly press the plunger to inject the ink into the cartridge.

Some Dell printer cartridges already have holes for refilling. To check for these holes, pull off the labels on the top of the cartridge. The holes will be clearly visible. Place the tip of the needle into the hole nearest the copper strip of the cartridge and very slowly inject the ink using the syringe. Replacing the top label when you are finished will help prevent any ink spills. The pre-made holes in the tops of newer Dell cartridges may be too small for the needle that comes with a refill kit. If this is the case, use the thumb drill to widen the hole before filling the cartridge.
