How to Test a Pressure Valve

    • 1). Look at the pressure valve on the water heater. This is found at the top, with an overflow pipe that runs down the side of the water heater. Inspect the pressure valve for large amounts of rust or corrosion, especially where the valve is attached to the water heater tank. Replace the pressure valve if necessary.

    • 2). Put a bucket underneath the end of the overflow pipe and open the pressure valve.

    • 3). Watch to see how much water is going into the bucket. Let the water run for at least five seconds. If the water does not flow out freely with the pressure valve opened, there is a problem and the pressure valve needs to be replaced.
