- A bachelor's degree in business administration, information technology, management science, mathematics or engineering is required to become a business analyst. In addition, during the degree studies, the student should take courses that enhance his understanding of the principles involved in business, the various communication techniques used, and problem solving, marketing, budgeting and technology. With a bachelor's degree, a graduate can find an entry-level business analyst position. With experience, he may end up getting more complex tasks, like devising business models and solving business-related problems.

A master's degree in business administration or information technology allows a person to develop her abilities to communicate effectively, find reasonable solutions to problems and respond to the ever-changing business environment. A master's degree will allow a business analyst to move to a more senior position within an organization.

These are: enterprise analysis, planning and managing projects, communication, elicitation, analysis and providing documentation for it, and finding, assessing and validating solutions.
- Being certified as a Certified Business Analysis Professional by the International Institute of Business Analysts gives more credence to a business analyst. Along with a bachelor's degree, she should have five years of working experience before taking the certification examination. In addition, she should have expertise in at least four of the six spheres of business analysis, two references from qualified business analysts and valid documentation to show that she's had 21 hours of professional development training while being employed.
