- 1). Cut a piece of cardboard so it fits into a cookie sheet.
- 2). Cut the top 2 inches from a 20-oz. soda bottle, and glue the base to the cardboard.
- 3). Build the volcano around the bottle with modeling clay. The shape should look like a mountain, with a hole in the top that corresponds to the hole in the bottle. If you do not have modeling clay, make some with water, flour and a little salt mixed into a claylike consistency. Allow several days for the volcano sculpture to dry.
- 4). Paint the volcano according to your preferences. Brown gives an earthy look and green a grassy or tree-filled terrain. Allow the sculpture to dry again.
- 5). Pour 1/2 cup vinegar, 6 drops dish-washing liquid and red food coloring into the bottle, which should be completely encased in the volcano sculpture except for the opening.
- 6). Pour 4 tbsp. baking soda into the volcano when you are ready for your eruption. Move away quickly, because the eruption will occur almost immediately after you add the baking soda.
