How to Use the Ascensia Contour Blood Glucose Meter

Setting Up Your Ascensia Contour Meter

    • 1). Read Contour's User Guide before attempting to test your blood sugar. If you have any questions or concerns about the use of your meter, discuss them with your doctor, pharmacist or a Bayer representative before attempting to use your meter.

    • 2). Access the set-up screen by pressing the "M" button on the meter for three seconds to set the time and date on your meter. In the upper left corner of the screen,"12H" should be flashing.

    • 3). Press the up or down arrows on the meter to select 12-hour, 24-hour or military time. Press "M" to save this setting.

    • 4). Repeat Step 3 to set the hours, minutes and date, pressing "M" after each to save results and move on to the next option.

    Perform a Control Solution Test

    • 1). Insert a Contour test strip into the meter by placing the gray end of the test strip into the opening in the meter. Make sure to close the test strip vial tightly after each use to prevent moisture from getting inside. Use only Contour test strips with the Ascensia Contour meter.

    • 2). Dispense Ascensia Contour control solution onto test strip following the instructions on the control solution packaging. The meter will calculate the results and automatically mark the results as a control test.

    • 3). Compare the test result with the range found on the control solution packaging to confirm the accuracy of the results. If the results are accurate, you can discard test strip and proceed to testing yourself.

    Testing Your Blood Sugar

    • 1). Gather all the supplies you will need for testing your blood sugar. This should include your meter, test strips, control solution, lancing device, lancets, alcohol prep pads and your user guide.

    • 2). Wash and dry hands thoroughly before testing your blood sugar. Bayer recommends this to promote the safety and accuracy of glucose testing. You may also want to clean the puncture site with an alcohol prep pad to ensure the site is clean.

    • 3). Insert a lancet into lancet device following the instructions in the lancet device's user guide. Instructions for assembling lancet device may vary by model.

    • 4). Select a Contour test strip from the test strip vial. Insert the gray end of the Contour test strip into the port at the end of the meter. The meter will then display a flashing blood drop indicating that the meter is ready for you to test.

    • 5). Puncture your finger (or other testing site) with the lancing device. To deploy the lancet, follow instructions in the lancet device's user guide. Bayer suggests stroking your hand and finger in the direction of the puncture site to help the blood flow more easily.

    • 6). Allow the drop of blood that forms at the puncture site to drop onto the end of the test strip. Do not press your finger against the test strip. Your test results will appear in five seconds and will automatically be stored in the meter's memory.

    • 7). Turn your meter off by removing the test strip. Discard the test strip after each use. Attempting to reuse test strips will produce inaccurate test results.
