Laws Regarding Golf Carts on Georgia City Streets

    Driver's License Requirements

    • In the Georgia cities of Dunwoody and Tifton, golf carts may be operated only on public streets with a posted speed limit no higher than 35 mph. Golf cart drivers in both Dunwoody and Tifton must possess a valid motorized vehicle driver's license. In Peachtree City, however, golf cart operators are not required to have a driver's license when driving on the 90 miles of multi-use public pathways stretching through its neighborhoods and business areas.

    Texting While Driving

    • Texting while driving--whether in an automobile or a golf cart--became illegal in Georgia on July 1, 2010. Proponents say the law will help to protect golf cart operators from accidents and potential injury, especially in Georgia cities where golf carts can be operated on city streets with other motor vehicles. In Peachtree City, where police say there are 60 to 70 golf cart-related accidents each year, CBS Atlanta reporter Mike Paluska reported that police officials hope the law is a deterrent to texting while operating a golf cart.

    Registration and Insurance

    • In Peachtree City, golf carts must be registered at City Hall, no later than 10 days after the golf cart is purchased. A small application fee may apply. In Dunwoody and Tifton, owners must register their golf carts with the city and pay a $10 fee before operating a golf cart on city streets. In addition, a registration decal must be visibly displayed on the rear of all publicly operated golf carts to confirm compliance with the law.

Tifton requires golf cart operators to have liability insurance that meets the state's minimum requirement for operating motor vehicles. In Peachtree City, golf cart owners are "strongly encouraged" to buy liability insurance. In Dunwoody, insurance also is recommended but isn't mandatory.

    Age Requirements

    • Each city in Georgia sets its own age requirements for operators of golf carts. In Dunwoody and Peachtree City, for instance, anyone 16 or older can operate a golf cart, as long as he has a valid driver's license.

In Peachtree City, a 15-year-old with a valid learner's permit can drive a cart by herself. If she doesn't have a permit, she can drive a cart if accompanied by a licensed legal guardian, parent, grandparent or someone at least 18 years old who has a valid driver's license. Those ages 12, 13 and 14 can drive a cart if accompanied in the front seat by a parent or other responsible adult with a driver's license.

In Dunwoody, a 15-year-old with a driver's permit can operate a golf cart if accompanied by someone 18 or older who has a valid driver's license. No one under 15 can operate a golf cart, however.
